Recognising and Embracing the Talents That Make You Unique.

Have you ever admired a skill, trait, or talent that someone demonstrates, and then be tempted to imitate them? I know I have. For example, I have great admiration for Robin Banks (he does John Kehoe’s “Mind Power” training in South Africa) ability to make his audience laugh. I also admire Richard Mulvey’s (sales trainer) ability to exhibit wit when he does his workshops (I have attended several over the years). For a while, I attempted to be like them but failed dismally.

With the benefit of hindsight (and education) I learnt a valuable lesson. Robin Banks and Richard Mulvey had already been taken; I could not be another one of them (smile). I have learnt that each person is unique (and special) in their own way. We all have talents and strengths to be admired. I have experienced this myself.

For example, a couple of years ago I joined a BNI Chapter in Centurion (Business Networking International). Ten months later it was time to appoint a new President for the Chapter, and the Regional Director asked me if I would be willing to be President for the ensuing year. Up until then I had had the greatest admiration for the current President. Ingrid’s leadership style was refreshing and engaging, and I felt somewhat overwhelmed by the prospect of having to fill her shoes. I was persuaded to take up the opportunity. Since I had learnt my lesson about not trying to imitate someone else, I went ahead and did my best to fulfil the role of President.

Over the next few months, I received many compliments and expressions of appreciation from fellow BNI members, as well as the Regional Director, about the way I was leading the Chapter.

It dawned on me that I had perhaps not been aware of my own unique talents and strengths which others appreciated. This is often the case, since our innate talents are such a natural part of us, that we do not recognise them for what they are. It is easier for other people to spot them, and consequently to admire them.

Gallup research

According to Gallup, your uniqueness is your power. It allows you to leverage your individual strengths to achieve greater engagement, satisfaction, and success. Both personal and professional realms.

The concept is rooted in the CliftonStrengths assessment. Which identifies and celebrates the distinct talents and abilities that each person possesses.

The Importance of Individualization

Gallup emphasizes the Individualization theme, which focuses on recognizing and valuing the unique qualities of each person. Those who excel in this area are adept at understanding how different individuals can work together effectively. This approach fosters a sense of belonging and respect among team members, as it highlights their specific contributions and strengths. By treating people according to their unique traits rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, individuals feel more valued and engaged.

Strengths-Based Development

Gallup’s research shows that people who regularly use their strengths are six times more likely to feel engaged at work and three times more likely to report a higher quality of life. This engagement leads to improved productivity and performance, as individuals align their work with their innate abilities. The idea is that by embracing one’s uniqueness, individuals can carve out paths that resonate with their true selves, enhancing both personal fulfilment and professional effectiveness.

The Role of Self-Awareness

Self-awareness plays a crucial role in harnessing one’s uniqueness. Understanding personal strengths not only aids in career planning but also enhances decision-making and overall life satisfaction. Gallup suggests that recognizing and developing these unique traits can lead to transformative insights, allowing individuals to thrive by overcoming barriers and maximizing their potential.

Conclusion

In summary, your uniqueness is your power because it empowers you to engage deeply with your work, fosters collaboration through appreciation of individual strengths, and enhances overall well-being by aligning your career with your authentic self.
